| Professional Officer Safe Traffic Stops |
| The POSTS course includes site seletion, vehicle placement, use of lights, radio procedure, exit and approach (including passenger side), contact, officer introduction, statement for the stop, profiling vs. racial profiling, tactical communications using rapport, empathy and understanding, imaginary officer presence, return and explanation in a caring parent way, selling the citation, answering questions and closure.
This program starts in the classroom for 2 hours and moves to scenario training outside. A video "Your Vest Won't Stop This Bullet" is shown. A variety of scenarios are demonstrated and practical exercises conducted. Single occupant, multiple occupants, tinted windows, vans and trucks, daytime vs. nighttime. Approach or call out? Where to conduct business for the safety of all involved. Officer/offender space and how to use what's in your hands as a weapon/deflection or distraction. Traffic stops are two types of "animals," compliant or non-compliant. |
